The SAMI Galaxy Survey: Detection of Environmental Dependence of Galaxy Spin in Observations and Simulations Using Marked Correlation Functions

The existence of a kinematic morphology-density relation remains uncertain, and instead stellar mass appears the more dominant driver galaxy kinematics. We investigate dependence spin parameter proxy $\lambda_{R_e}$ on environment using marked cross-correlation method with data from SAMI Galaxy Survey. Our sample contains 710 galaxies spatially resolved velocity dispersion measurements. By utilising highly complete spectroscopic GAMA survey, we calculate functions for pair count estimator marks based $\lambda_{R_e}$. detect an anti-correlation kinematics at 3.2$\sigma$ level, such that low values are preferably located in denser environments. However, significant correlation between is also found (correlation 2.4$\sigma$), as previous works. compare these results to mock-observations cosmological EAGLE simulations, where find similar environment, correlation. demonstrate environmental not caused by mass-environment relation. relationship when exclude slow rotators. signals strongest small scales (10-100 kpc) expected interactions mergers. work demonstrates technique effective tool detecting environment.
